We are investigating alternative conceptions held by students, focussing particularly on issues between 1st and 2nd year of university teaching and how pre-university study can influence these. Current areas include NMR (and other 1st year spectroscopy) and inorganic chemistry. We have two diagnostic tests in development, one for early 1st year looking at alternative conceptions in spectroscopy (prior to the start of university teaching), and one for mid-2nd year looking at alternative conceptions in NMR (prior to teaching multinuclear NMR). We are also working to create banks of peer instruction questions suitable for use in number of classes across spectroscopy and inorganic chemistry that can allow students to identify misconceptions they may hold.
